What Is an AI Visibility Assessment, and What Does It Cost?
By Syndesi
An AI visibility assessment records whether AI names your business, checks the sources behind the answers, and gives you a prioritized plan. Here is what ours includes.
An AI visibility assessment checks whether systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity mention your business when someone asks a relevant question. It records the answers, checks the sources those answers use, and identifies changes you can make to your website and business information.
At Syndesi, the AI Visibility Assessment costs $149 at a fixed price. It is designed for owner-run businesses in Chicagoland, including Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Palatine, and Schaumburg. The assessment gives you a report and a walkthrough. Any implementation work is scoped separately.
What questions should an assessment test?
Use questions a prospective customer might ask before they know your name. For a local business, that can include the service, the town, a specific need, and a buying constraint. Asking only whether AI knows your business name measures a different thing from being recommended to a new customer.
Illustrative questions include “Who helps a small business in Arlington Heights improve its visibility in ChatGPT?” and “What should an AI visibility assessment include?” These test different needs. A provider recommendation and a general explanation should not be combined into one unexplained score.
Our standard assessment uses 33 buyer questions, repeated three times across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. The report explains what could be measured. Missing or unusable answers should be recorded separately, rather than silently counted as evidence that a business is invisible.
What should the report contain?
The questions and testing conditions
The wording, dates, systems, and relevant location context should be recorded. AI answers change. A result without that context is difficult to repeat or interpret.
Mentions and citations, counted separately
An answer may name a business without linking to its website. Another may cite a useful article without recommending its publisher as a provider. Both can matter, but they are different outcomes.
Competitors and the sources used
The report should show which businesses appeared instead and the sources that were visible in those answers. That gives you something concrete to investigate, such as missing business information or a useful topic your site does not cover.
A prioritized fix list
Separate technical issues from content gaps and information that needs updating on external business profiles. Each recommendation should have a reason and a way to check whether it was completed.
Is this the same as SEO or GEO?
SEO addresses discovery through search engines. AEO and GEO are terms people use for work aimed at answer engines and generative search. The labels overlap. We focus on the actual question, the evidence returned, and the work needed to improve the information available about your business.
Google's guidance ties eligibility for its generative search features to the same underlying crawlability, indexing, and content foundations used in Search. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its crawler for ChatGPT search. Allowing a crawler is a technical requirement to check, not a promise that your business will be selected.
Does buying an assessment guarantee recommendations?
No. An assessment measures a starting point and identifies work to do. It cannot buy a recommendation or guarantee a ranking. A single favorable answer is also not proof of a reliable improvement.
We published our own August 2026 assessment. Syndesi appeared in zero of 77 measured provider-recommendation answers. The report explains that denominator and includes examples. It is a dated baseline, not a claim about every question a person could ask AI.
How do you know whether the work helped?
Use two separate scorecards. In Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster, track relevant non-branded impressions, clicks, and the pages earning them. In repeated AI checks, record mentions and citations using the same questions and comparable testing conditions.
Compare complete periods and keep a dated record of changes. If a question set or model changes, record that too. Increased impressions are useful only when they move toward the customers and services you actually want.
For a Chicagoland owner, the useful outcome is a clear answer to three questions: can customers find you, what information do they see, and what should you fix next?
